In France, the Météo France dispute shows the growth of a consumer movement about public data access.
Météo France, has decided since the 15th of June, to sell the 3 days weather forecast (the daily weather forecast is still free). But this policy was stopped in front of the consumers' outcry.
Météo France revenues in data dissemination represent about 20 millions of €. Météo France wanted to make its website more profitable: at the beginning, like many others companies, Météo France thought that the advertising could balance its costs.
This dispute, related in all the national newspapers, shows that the public data access can mobilize the consumers and their associations. This event is also interesting because it shows the stakes in public data access, for professionals and citizens, especially in the environmental and territories field.

| The National Weather Service wants to update a 1991 policy that limits what data it can put on the Internet. The proposed new policy makes putting free data on the Internet official. The Private Weather Sector wants NWS to provide its new digital forecasts only in specialized data formats and would like NWS to shut down new XML data feeds.
